As the festive season approaches, many of us are preparing to wrap presents, catch up with loved ones and enjoy a well-earned break. This is why Christmas is one of the busiest times for cyberattacks … attention is diverted, staffing levels dwindle and more of us work remotely.
Research shows that the number of cyberattacks rises by 30% during holiday periods (Cyberlab). With this increased risk in mind, here are some essential tips to balance remote work, cybersecurity and the festivities!
Before you go …
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication. MFA is one of the most effective ways to prevent account breaches, even if your password is compromised. It acts as a critical safety net.
- Update all devices. Install security updates and patches on your laptop, mobile, and any work-related apps before you set off. Out-of-date software is one of the easiest ways for attackers to breach your systems.
- Back up before you switch off. Ensure all important files, systems, and configurations are backed up and secure before beginning your break.

As you travel …
- Avoid working via public Wi-Fi. Airports, cafés, and train stations are hotspots for cybercriminals. If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a VPN (virtual private network) and avoid opening sensitive data.
- Be aware of shoulder surfers! Public spaces get crowded in December. If you need to work in transit, use a privacy screen and avoid opening confidential or financial data where other people can see it. Even better, don’t access sensitive information.
While you’re working remotely …
Be aware of festive phishing emails. Fake delivery notices, seasonal sales and charity scams are common at this time of year. Hover before you click to check a destination URL, inspect sender details and report anything suspicious. If in doubt … delete!
- Keep work and personal devices separate. When staying away or hosting the festivities, don’t let anyone “borrow” your work laptop. Even harmless browsing can expose your device to malware, leaving your company at risk.
- Avoid sharing work info through personal messaging apps. It’s quick and easy to contact colleagues via WhatsApp, iMessage or social media. However, stick to secure, company-approved platforms to protect sensitive information.
We hope these cybersecurity tips keep you and your data safe this festive season. Make the most of the freedom and flexibility of technology and remote working without the risk … and enjoy Christmas!
